1988 Mazda 323 GTX Paint / Post Paint Requirements
PRIORITY: Rust removal and quality of body workSecond priority: Paint
Process: Leaks to be fixed in spring 2006, the remainder of rust in fall 2006 or spring 2007.
STAGE 1 - Leaks eliminated and hatch repaint
See pics of completed stage 1 here.PREP UPPER:
- hatch: remove lock tumbler and key mechanism, both emblems and lower wing, and patch holes. None of this is to be reinstalled. Emblems and lower wing to be returned to me, lock tumbler mechanism can be thrown out.
- rear Window: Is it leaking into trunk, or is it under the wing that's leaking (suspect hole under the wing)? Does window needs to be pulled to fix rust around where it seats, or to properly fix/weld the hatch?
- remove rear window trim to check for rust and for repaint.
- windshield cowl (black unit over top of windshield wiper motor) to be removed and any rust fixed.
Trunk is leaking, must be fixed, to put in stereo equipment.
Water is leaking into driver's side foot well. Drip from above onto driver's left foot while on the clutch. Must be fixed - keeping the car long term. Suspect temporary fiberglass repairs done by previous owner. Does driver's quarter panel need to be removed to fix it properly?
- under hood holes at driver's side rear of engine bay that have been fibreglassed need to be fixed properly.
- Suspected rust under windshield cowling - remove and check for rust.
Repaint exterior of hatch in same colour, and any repaired areas under hood to properly protect the body work. estimate 2-3 layers of paint, 3-4 layers of clearcoat
PAINT EXCEPTIONS - NOT TO BE PAINTED:
- upper wing being installed - left factory textured black
- rear window trim to be left factory black
- interior of hatch door unless body work requires it
- install, and seal upper wing. Weld in heely coils instead of relying on plastic clamps maybe? Car will be driven on extremely rough roads.
STAGE 2 - Rust repair, full repaint
PREP TO BE PERFORMED BY ME:- fog lights & driving lights will be removed before car comes in for paint
- heat resistant material will be removed under hood for full hood repaint
- Antenna on driver's side will be removed
- sunroof: minor rust starting inside track. Remove track if possible to repair.
- rain gutters: remove gutter trim, refinish, reweld if necessary - will be used to haul around bikes on rough roads. Needs to be solid.
- fill where driver's side antenna was. Rear glass mount antenna will be installed afterwards. No need for new antenna hole.
- wheel wells: new metal. Prefer not to have OE style lip on flared portion: makes more room for wider tires without rubbing, and allows better ability to clean out mud, snow, dirt, dust, and water
- door bottoms: definitely need new metal! what about drainage holes etc.
- rocker panels: new metal, obviously.
- jacking points on seams are rusted out. Need to have secure jacking points - count on 16-20 wheel changes per year. Prefer new metal and creation of larger jacking points
- remove side mouldings and fill holes. new metal where required. side mouldings should not be reinstalled
- two drilled holes in bumper where fog lights used to be do not need to be filled/patched. New fog light bracket will cover them. No risk of rust there.
- front and Rear bumpers removed to check for additional rust, fixed where necessary.
- tail lights, rear fascia trim to be removed, rust fixed, and repainted
- under hood drainage underneath wiper motor to be fixed so water does not pool
- mud flaps removed, mounting points repaired / reinforced, and mud flaps reinstalled
- door sills removed and checked for rust
Full exterior repaint in same colour. estimate 2-3 layers of paint, 3-4 layers of clearcoat
Painting will specifically include:
- front bumper
- rear bumper
- front quarter panels including part that wraps into engine bay
- lower portion that is currently dark grey. (Remove 2-tone concept to single colour)
- exposed areas in inside of hatch door
- exposed areas in door frames and on doors
- underside of hood
- under windshield cowling up to start of engine bay
- holes MAY be cut into hood for vents. To be finished properly in the shop and painted properly
- grill to be repainted. All white, including mesh and "MAZDA" text
- gas filler door and inside filler door
- mirror body except where factory colour is black
- broken trim under headlights. Will replace with new trim
- engine bay, except where the front quarters wrap into the engine bay
- black trim around the windows. possibly repainted black at some later point by me
- black trim on mirrors
- black trim on each side of license plate
- door handles
- window washer spray nozzles
- mudflaps
